Team 54 Project International and SAYeTECH Company Limited in collaboration with the KNUST SRC TRATECH, presents the first ever KNUST Agrotech Challenge.
In this challenge, we ask students to solve problems that the Ghanaian agricultural sector has posed over the years.
The Ghanaian food system is expected to provide safe and nutritious food to a population that will likely grow from 31.6 million people today, to nearly 52 million by 2050. In an attempt to feed the ever growing population, the Ghanaian food system leaves a large environmental footprint. In fact, agriculture occupies over 30% percent of Ghana’s total land area and the expansion of agricultural lands leads to deforestation and the loss of biodiversity. A large percentage of the country’s water supply is used for the irrigation of agricultural crops. Moreover, agriculture directly contributes to around 15% of the country’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (mostly through bush burning and cattle rearing).
QUESTION: Suggest how technology could be used to ensure food security for a growing Ghanaian population while improving environmental sustainability.
