Is Sassa Going to Pay R350 Grants from April

The importance of R350 cannot be overstated. In 2021, the Department of Social Development (DSD) found that 93% of grant money was spent on food while 20% was used to purchase electricity.

The R350 grant ensures that vulnerable adults in South Africa receive some financial support from the government. It is expected that around 10 million adults will benefit from the grant after several changes were made to the qualifying criteria.

However, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has been criticised after grant recipients did not receive the crucial relief for a few months. The delay of April and May 2022 grant payments was due to several reasons.

Sassa has assured R350 grant beneficiaries that their April and May grants will be paid. They revealed that a major backlog resulted in the non-payment of grants. Sassa has stated that if grant applicants were approved for April, they will receive payment.

One of the main reasons for the non-payment of April 2022 R350 grants was because the Department of Social Development (DSD) had to finalise a functional verification process and to ensure all systems are in place for the disbursement of the grant.

Sassa said the introduction of this verification process has been completed and they will proceed with grant payments. The agency revealed that April R350 grant payments will be made during the month of July while May R350 grant payments will be made in August.

“April verification and payments resumed on 12 July 2022. May 2022 verification has not yet started, therefore the status remains pending for the month of May”, explained Sassa.

Civil groups have criticised Sassa in relation to their communication and administration of the R350 Grant. They have called on the agency to do more to assist vulnerable individuals living in South Africa.
