NSFAS has announced a new requirement to the current application process. Already with 2023 student funding applications having been recently announced by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), the bursary scheme has added a new requirement that courses should meet an accreditation standard.

All student funding applications are processed under the NSFAS and approved by the institution only once a candidate has been selected for enrolment.

NSFAS applications for the 2023 academic year are officially open to all prospective students who require financial aid.

In his official announcement, Higher Education Minister Blade Ndzimande also mentioned a few key changes to make applications more convenient.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Department of Higher Education Minister said that all current NSFAS funding recipients are required to create an account on the new platform by following the steps listed below:

How To Create A myNSFAS Account.

  1. Type in first names (as per ID number)
  2. Type in Surname (as per ID number)
  3. Type in your ID number (will your username)
  4. Type in your Email address
  5. Type in your Cell Phone number
  6. Accept terms and conditions Tick the box provided, to allow NSFAS to check the information provided (compulsory)
  7. Create a Password, to protect your account

Clicking on applying at nsfas.gov.za brings up a page that requires students to enter their personal details and click next. The first thing to do would be to enter their father’s ID number, which is generated by NSFAS. If a student has been awarded a grant by NSFAS, then he or she will be directed immediately to this page.

Department of Home Affairs database will be used by NSFAS to verify the ID number, names, and surnames of participating applicants. Only valid South African ID data will be accepted. All applicants must ensure that their application is complete, legible, and accurate. Applicants who do not meet the bursary’s specified requirements will be disqualified from the scheme.

With the bursary scheme, students will not have to worry about accommodation or transport, amongst other things.

NSFAS funding approval covers: Registration, Tuition, Allowance for, Food, Accommodation or transport, learning material as well as personal care.
