The Sassa R350 payment is a very important financial lifeline for vulnerable South Africans. However, a recent change to the regulations regarding the qualifying criteria for the R350 grant will result in more people receiving the crucial relief mechanism. However, the timing of these regulation changes meant millions of people lost out on grant payments.

The Department of Social Development (DSD) had to use alternative legislation to distribute the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant. This resulted in a delay in payments due to legal and administrative constraints.

Under the new legislation, qualified beneficiaries of the SRD grant who were subject to a three-monthly income verification process will now revert back to an annual income verification process.

This means that anyone who applied for the SRD grant in April 2022 had to reconfirm their SRD grant applications in July 2022. Because three months had passed since the original applications, everyone had to confirm that they still needed this grant and that they hadn’t been able to find an income in the interim period.

“The assessment for July 2022 had some delays because the previous regulations required people to reconfirm their grant every three months. June 2022 was the third month from April and many people failed to reconfirm their grants” explained the DSD.

The department is calling for all SRD grant applicants to provide correct details as a result of the latest change in regulations.

You can delay your Sassa Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant payment by providing incorrect details. Sassa will also conduct ongoing communication and publicity to ensure that more people apply for SRD grants.
