The South African Social Security (Sassa) has recently stated reconsideration applications for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant are currently underway. Applicants who have been granted an SRD benefit, but who need to top up their current amount may submit a request to Sassa.

The spokesperson for Sassa said that all grant payments would be disbursed as planned.

Good news! Sassa issues a provisional grant to the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant recipient who has been waiting for feedback on their appeal application.

For those who applied for reconsideration of your R350 grant payments, you should have received an SMS from Sassa informing you that your payment is currently being prepared.

Sassa has been dealing with the thorny issue of reconsideration since last year August 2021. The process has now ended and those who qualify will start receiving their payment this week. Check your bank notification.

The Sassa Reconsideration Unit has also urged this group of R350 grant beneficiaries to not visit the South African Post Office to collect their grant payments as it is now no longer a valid outlet to do so.

If you received an SMS notification saying that your Sassa grant has been reduced to R350, then we are advising beneficiaries to collect their full grant payment R350 at a Sassa-approved retail outlet.

Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi has revealed they are considering putting in place a process that will allow beneficiaries to appeal their R350 grant and receive payments while Sassa attends to the root causes of the payment problem.

“We just didn’t want to have a big bank approach, we wanted to make sure that we do it steadily incrementally so that we do not necessarily have the collapse of the system. But from where we are we think that they will definitely make sure that each and every person gets what is due today.”
