Drivers in South Africa can now book their driver’s license renewal online without waiting in line at the Driver’s License Testing Center (DLTC). The Ministry of Transport has launched a series of online services on RTMC https://online.natis.gov.za The online platform was first available in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape provinces before being launched nationwide.

The services include:

  • The online application, issuing and delivery of a motor vehicle license and disc to the owner of the motor vehicle.
  • The online application, issuing, and delivery of a registration certificate of a motor vehicle to the title holder of the motor vehicle for financial institutions, large fleet operators, and motor dealers.
  • The online application and payment for a booking for renewal, in person, of a driving license card at a driving license testing center.
  • The online application and payment for such driving license card delivery to the holder concerned.
  • The provision of an electronic copy of an accident report.
  • The online notification of the change of ownership of a motor vehicle by the current title holder or owner will be implemented later.

A driver’s license must be renewed four weeks before it expires. If you wish to renew after the expiration date, you will be required to apply for a provisional driver’s license for an additional fee while waiting for your driver’s license to be issued.

How To Renew Your Driver’s License Online In South Africa

  1. Go to your nearest DLTC with the following:
    • Identity document (ID) and a copy of your ID, old driving license card or valid South African passport
    • Four black-and-white ID photographs (before you have photographs taken confirm with the DLTC how many photos they require)
    • Proof of residential address e.g. utility account. If the utility bill is not in your name, the of owner of the bill must make an affidavit declaring that you live at the address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit. 
    • If you stay at an informal settlement, you must bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your residential address
    • Prescribed application fee.
  2. All Gauteng residents should apply online for the renewal: https://online.natis.gov.za/#/
  3. Complete form DL1: Application for renewal of driving license card.
  4. Complete the notification of change of address or particulars of person or organization (NCP) form.
  5. You will do an eye test or you can do it at an optometrist of your choice and take your results to the DLTC.
