SASSA has announced the following changes to its payments processes. Whilst SASSA R350 payments will no longer be available from Post Office branches, SRD grant beneficiaries can now collect their payments from the supermarkets and stores below:

  • Pick n Pay
  • Boxer
  • Shoprite
  • Checkers
  • USave merchants

Before going to collect your payment from one of the supermarkets above, beneficiaries need to set up their payment option for it as below:

  1. Firstly, you must have your own cellphone number to be able to receive your R350 payment at one of the supermarkets above.
  2. Then log on to srd.sassa.gov.za.
  3. Once you’ve logged in, you must respond to the security SMS you receive on your phone to proceed.
  4. Once that’s done, you can then choose the merchants in your application from where you want to collect your money.
  5. Once you’ve made your choice, submit the updated application.

The beneficiaries will receive their grants in cash at the supermarket. The trustees will call the beneficiaries on their cell phones and inform them about the place and time of their payment.

Grant beneficiaries who receive old age, disability or child payments from the South African Social Services Agency (SASSA) can still collect their grants from any Post Office branch.

When Will SASSA Social Relief Grant (SRD) End

The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) has been extended until March 2023, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his SONA.

If you have already applied you can do a SASSA status check for R350 payment dates, as above. Many more will qualify, for instant care givers, for the SASSA R350 grant payments.

The SASSA R350 grant is available as part of the COVID-19 Social Relief Of Distress Fund. The grant is intended to assist people who are affected by the pandemic and are in urgent need of financial support. To qualify, you must be unemployed, under-employed or retired due to COVID-19 and if you fall into any one of these categories you will also need to apply for a social relief grant.

SASSA Status Pending

When you do your status check for R350, you get a “SASSA Status Pending” message and as a result you’re unable to receive your grant payment. This is because your account has not been verified yet at the time of doing the status check.

SASSA is aware of the difficulties citizens have experienced in establishing their identity. SASSA has made every effort to correct this, but there are certain messages that we cannot control. The official response from SASSA regarding the status pending message is that payments for the new cycle were delayed, or suspended, as the qualifying criteria had changed.

The R350 income threshold was lowered significantly, to R350 per month. This meant that many previous beneficiaries no longer qualified for this grant. However, payments for the new cycle of the R350 SRD grant (backdated from April 2022) resumed from mid-June 2022.

SASSA went on to say that outstanding payments from the previous cycle would be continued to be cleared as and when the beneficiaries’ bank details were confirmed. The payments would not be done together, but would be done month by month.
