Employment opportunities for availability to start after 16th April:

Animal Attendant  /  Reception

ANIMAL ATTENDANTS look after dogs and cats and are responsible for the professional, sympathetic and ethical care of pets. Basic duties & criteria listed below.

RECEPTION requires you to be the welcoming front of house face, with a “nothing is too much trouble attitude” to make our clients feel comfortable when leaving their furkids with us.  You will be very hands on with checking in and checking out pets. You must have exceptional communication skills – in person and on the phone with computer knowledge (data entry/emails/Excel/Word etc) with the ability to learn computer reservation programs.  Be able to problem solve with excellent attention to detail.  Depending on the applicant, you will commence as an Animal Attendant just so you have a working knowledge of what our ladies in the kennels and the cattery do on a day to day basis.  Nevertheless, confidence with handling dogs and cats is a must.

WHAT ARE THE BASIC DUTIES?

  • Maintain and clean dog and cat rooms throughout the day.
  • Feed, play with, pat, cuddle, comfort, administer medication and hydrobath dogs.
  • Monitor, report and record pet’s health and wellbeing.
  • Lots of other stuff too numerous to mention here.

WHAT IS THE CRITERIA?

Experience in an animal related industry is a great advantage because you know what you are getting yourself into.  However, it’s not a necessity if you are crazy in love with animals and confident around them.  Meeting all of the follow criteria is an absolute must.

You definitely need to be:

  • Physically fit and mentally capable, strong, experienced and confident with animals and able to handle and control dogs (especially large breeds on a lead).
  • Energetic and not be worried about getting your hands dirty.  This job involves a lot of cleaning, walking, bending, lifting (up to 20kg) and being on your feet all day in all types of weather.
  • Willing to work actively, be on time, extremely reliable and honest.
  • Able to take direction and have a desire to learn.
  • Able to work as a team member, respecting those you work with.
  • Able to work individually and unsupervised (when competent).
  • Have a current driver’s licence and own transport (no public transport available).
  • Available to work during our hours of operation, starting at 7am finishing up to 5pm.
  • Able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions.
  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident.

This job does not have you sitting under a tree playing with dogs all day.  It is very hard work.

This job is not suitable if you care for someone who may require you to be unable to start at 7am and finish at 5pm, unable to work on a rostered shirt or be called away whilst working.

WHAT DAYS DO WE NEED YOU?

Simple answer, our guests require our care 365 days a year.

  • You will need to be available to work any of the 7 days a week, starting at 7am and finishing up to 5pm.  However, for the right applicant, we may consider Animal Attendants who have animal related Uni or TAFE courses a couple of days a week.
  • You will need to be available all school and public holidays, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years’ Day and Easter.

WHEN ARE ROSTERS DONE?

They are done 1 to 2 weeks in advance.  This is because our business is seasonal and the number of pets in our care vary from week to week, which means staff numbers need to be adjusted accordingly.  Our ladies prefer this as it allows them to ask for days off when they need them, rather than be restricted to a rotating roster.

HOURS PER WEEK?

Hours vary, but generally they start at 20 hours up to 40 hours/week.

Applicants start on a paid supervised trial basis.  Employment will not continue if we feel you are not suited to the job and at the same time, you may feel the job is not suited to you.

HOW MUCH MONEY DO I GET?

Casual Adult (over 21) rate per hour, start at $26.73 Monday to Friday (this includes casual loading), with penalty rates paid for Saturday, Sundays and Public Holidays.  Plus 10.5% Superannuation paid on Gross. Rates increase when you are able to work competently and unsupervised.

HOW DO I APPLY?

  • Ideally, how many hours per week would you like to work (10-20, 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, 35+)?
